Top Sights To See in Lapland

There’s always something to see in Lapland. From the sky show put on by the aurora borealis to the picturesque landscapes of inner Lapland, the region is a place truly untouched by the ravages of modern life. Although all sights in the region are amazing, there are some top sights to see in Lapland that should not be missed.

The Lainio Snow Village is created each November from about a thousand truck loads of snow. The breathtaking sight, made from nothing but snow, covers an area of about 20,000 square meters and completely melts every summer in about April. Whether you come to spend a night in the Snow Hotel or just come to wander the Snow Village’s halls (complete with a lobby and restaurant), the Snow Village is a wonder of icy proportions. For the 2010-11 season, the Snow Village will be open from December 10, 2010 to April 15, 2011. There is an entrance fee, and opening hours are subject to change.

If you’re not ready to get that cold yet, take a look at the Arktikum, an exhibition of the way of life of all of Lapland’s inhabitants from prehistoric times to the present. Carefully examine the culture of the Sami people or take a gander at how northern Finland developed into the hybrid technological-polar society it is today.

If you’re a nature lover, you would enjoy a trip to the Ranua Wildlife Park. Walk near the Nordic animals along the ‘walking road’ or take a look at the birds native to the Lapland region. One big positive of the wildlife park is its humane treatment of animals. The park gives its animals room to breathe and places each one in an environment that is similar to the natural environment it would have experienced in the wild.

If you’re planning on visiting Lapland, it is a good idea to plan which attractions you’ll visit beforehand, as there is so much to do. Have fun!
